Hello,
my names Eli,
just had a cupple of questions,
my partner and I will be traveling up into OR sometime around spring,
our goal is to find a town to move to and start our next step in life.
Iv lived in So-cal for most of the last 25 years of my life, and Im in a position where I can go anywhere and do anything, so thats what I want to do =)

how hard is it too find houseing in the area?
We have a 1 year old cat that we would be bringing with us,
and I have a 21ft toyota dolphin RV' to bring with us as well, (for when we are vending during the festival season)
im hopeing having a Rv in OR wont be as much of a problem as it is down here...
here in so Cal, I get the cops called on parking the RV at least once a month and get hassled by many many people when we are traveling and parking it on surface streets at friends houses.

anyways, sorry to ramble on,
but Eugene is somewhere we are extreamly interested in!. is there a good time to visit in the spring? and events or festivals around then?

    Eli,

It can take a good bit of searching to find what your looking for in the way of housing here... On average I would say a month or two.... Depends on what your needs are.

As for the RV, you might have difficulties with parking, but there are lots of people living in cars and RV's here. You just have to flow with it.... Eugene has a long history with travelers, and the cops can be a pain in the ass, but I would not let that stop you....

As for a good time to visit, I would say mid june..... Spring is beautiful here, if you can deal grey sky's and lots of rain. Lots of flowers blooming and green everywhere.... The Oregon Country Fair is the biggest festival in the area, I think that is around the 4th of July. It is not an easy venue to vend at.... but you might have luck at the camp grounds were people stay during fair.

      Thanks for the info Isaac!

jah iv just gotten to a point where im trying not to be bothered by people who bother us for living in the RV,
I want to live in an actuall house, and have a town that is my home again, and a close group of friends or comunity,
I just havnt had a job in a bit, and its getting harder to make monies on the side so im still in the rv for now...

we almost made it up for the country fair last year, we where just a few hours away but had to turn back and stay in Nor Cal for an extra week and missed it =( lol

    Hey Eli,
I just wanted to say that my partner and I went to Oregon earlier this year with the same agenda and of all the cities we scouted, Eugene was our favorite HANDS DOWN. We are from Southern Cali as well and Eugene is exactly what we were hoping for.
We spent our time viewing condos for sale and rental properties. The places were smaller and more efficient than what we are used to in southern cali, but it was so beautiful and clean and friendly that we didn't mind it one bit!!!
The only thing holding us back is work. We discovered finding a job in Eugene to be a bit of a challenge with the current economy.
I wish you the best of luck and hope to join you in relocating soon! :)

im kinda sad that it sounds so hard to get a Job up north =(

We are in the SFV about to move to Palmdale (boo). I would recommend temp agencies for work. They can place anything from day laborer to professionals. I've heard about it just getting tougher and tougher to find a job there right now. Let's hope the new president will be able to make some changes.

Two temp agencies have gone out of business recently due to lack of jobs and a huge influx of people they couldn't take care of. My friend has two bachelors degrees, a masters and plenty of experience in her field and she is working at a coffee shop because the job market is so bad. I have a number of friends on the verge of homelessness. The cities largest manufacturer closed earlier this year leaving thousands jobless. The motorhome industry that supported so many of our local residents is failing and just did massive layoffs. When Chucky Cheese opened the Gateway Mall location they had 2000 applications for nothing but minimum wage jobs. My friends that work in the food service industry are telling me about the four or five inch stacks of resumes they get every week.

Don't come here unless you have a job lined up. You will just become a burden. Wait for the economy to get better. If you come up looking for a job, you may be depriving a local born resident of a job.

Wow - that is harsh man.

I have been out of work since last june. Im begining to wonder about Eugene.
I left Buffalo,NY in the 90's becuase of fewer and fewer jobs. Now Eugene feels the same way.

I do hope that you, myself and eveyone esle is lucky enough to find work that pays the bills.

Yeah, what Mayo said is harsh, but it's a stark reality. I know so many people applying for and not getting jobs that they are beyond overqualified for. I have friends who are looking for literally ANYTHING. My advice would be along the lines of Mayo's: don't expect to get a job here, don't toss yourself into a huge pit of people who may have to leave their homes and lives because they cannot support themselves.
I do wish we could all welcome you with open arms and offer you excellent jobs from which to choose, but we're just being honest.
                Best of luck.

Just curious what her degrees were in?

    Heyya Eli,

You are going to have different replies based on where each person is as far as jobs and housing. I myself have a good job... and I have never had a problem finding jobs - here or anywhere for that matter. I have a friend who has difficulty finding and holding onto a job, but that is partially because he parties all the time and is always tired and hagard...

I also have other friends who have good jobs, and do find jobs easily. It may depend on what field you are in as well. You are not going to find a manufaturing job here... way too many people have gotten laid off here that are in that field. Technology jobs are not that great either, they just had a computer manufacturing company go under last year... lots out of work.

But... it is totally possible to find a good job here... just depends on what you have to offer and what field you are in... and maybe a pinch of good luck. But there are jobs in the paper here, so there ARE jobs here. Google Register Guard newspaper and you will see some jobs, also craigslist, and the Eugene Weekly.

As far as parking your RV here, you are going to have decent luck with that... many people park in various parts of the city and live. There are several RVs parked on a church nearby where I work. It's something you WILL find much easier here... just depends on where you park, and I can help with suggestions if you do come here...

There are apartments here - even in the complex I live in that are available... rent is going to much cheaper than there as well. So you should easily find a place, as long as you don't try to rent right when the students are coming back into town for Fall Semester at college... a good time to rent is when they leave for the summer... Yes, spring is beautiful here, and would be your best time to visit.

The Oregon Country Fair is In July the weekend after 4th of July, this year it is July 10, 11 and 12. You can also set up at the Saturday Market every week. Getting vending spots is really as easy as finding out the criteria to apply to vend and following it... there is nothing difficult about it other than applying, paying the fee and showing up.

Eugene is considered to be a place that is a mecca for alternative lifestyles and you will find a lot of people into many diverse things....

You should definitely check it out prior to making your decision though, and it's always good to have a job lined up wherever you move to, but Eugene can be easier to adapt to that initial difficulty of finding a job and place.

Add on to my last post.... 2000 people just got laid off at a large RV manufacturing company here in town, so there will be over 1000 people or more looking for those jobs here, so you might want to rethink the timing of relocating here.

I have thought of relocating to Portland, but I have a good job here and don't want to give it up in this economy....

      Good luck at any rate...
